With the vision of achieving self-sufficiency in food production, Auroville farmers have been facing a daunting task working with depleted topsoil and receding water table. Aurovilians are constantly exploring with different irrigation techniques, cultivating non-hybrid seeds, and using organic methods.  Meanwhile, with the township being an international melting pot, and with the growth in the number of residents and guests, a variety of life styles and food consumption patterns are emerging.
