Appropriate Building Technologies

Auroville is envisaged as an international township for 50,000 residents. From the very beginning, Auroville architecture has been a rich field of experimentation. This reflects the creativity of the inhabitants as well as a lack of stifling building regulations. Some architects are more interested in form but others are concerned that the materials that they use should be as environmentally-sensitive and sustainable as possible.  To this end, indigenous materials and designs have been adopted and adapted and other promising construction technologies – like reinforced earth blocks and ferro-cement – have been developed or refined.

Today, Auroville presents a remarkable variety of styles, from simple thatch and mud houses to apartment complexes and public buildings. Each, to a greater or lesser extent, attempts to minimise its impact upon the earth and offer its residents an enhanced quality of life.
