Auroville’s Botanical Garden has designed programs to awaken local school children’s interest in a range of environmental issues including an introduction to local TDEF flora through an exposure visit and educational program at the Botanical Garden. The aim of the school’s visit is to introduce a range of relevant environmental topics to local students and create a model exposure visit package for future replications at other centers.

“The Auroville Botanical Garden has been established in response to the disappearing Tropical Dry Evergreen Forest (TDEF) of the Coromandel Coast, South India, and to the global need for the conservation of genetic diversity in the plant kingdom in a wide range of climatic conditions.”

Our programs are designed to awaken local school children’s interest in a range of environmental issues including an introduction to local TDEF flora through an exposure visit and educational program at the Botanical Garden.

The aim of the school’s visit is to introduce a range of relevant environmental topics to local students and create a model exposure visit package for future replications at other centers. Within this package it is hoped that the following are achieved:

• To provide an environmental education program for local school children in five different age groups

• To create awareness of biodiversity conservation and local environmental issues amongst the school children.

• To nurture a ‘clean and green consciousness’ among students through various innovative methods.

• To involve Eco Club students in open-orientation programs in schools and public areas.

• To offer for the local schools an experience that is innovative, informative and curriculum based, enhancing and complementing the programs that are already ongoing within the educational system.

We run the education programme in Auroville Botanical Garden with the permission of Education Department of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, Auroville education board, Parent Teachers Association, Local Head Masters and Parents
